Illness, loss, and repeated moves shaped Billy’s childhood. So did adventures with his sister Nedra, laughter, and kindness from people they met along the way.

In Part One, Barbara brings the childhood memories of her Uncle Bill to the page. Through Billy and Adelia, the struggles of an earlier generation become the story of people we can come to know.

THE STORY OF BILLY · PART ONE

A passage from the working manuscript

The Train Conductor
and his Kindness

Adelia and her children are on a train to Great Falls. She is ill, and the family has less money than they need for the journey.

The conductor saw that Adelia was sick and said she should rest.

She did what he said, and she slept. Even so, she kept feeling worse. Because Billy saw his mother was worse, he found that same conductor on the train and shared with him that his mother was very ill and asked him for some help. Billy was ten years of age at this time.

The conductor gave Billy a piece of paper with an address of a hotel on it. The conductor said he had a room at that hotel, and it was at the next stop. He said they all could stay there before they moved on in the next train to Great Falls. They all got off the train at the next stop and went to the room of the conductor at the hotel, and that is where they stayed for the next several days.
